Can a thin shell change a chip or a stain that will not bleach?
Some stains do not lift. Some chips catch the light every time you talk. Veneers are thin porcelain bonded to the front of a tooth — a different story than a crown, and a different story than another round of whitening. Lumineers® are an ultra-thin version meant, in many cases, to need little or no enamel removed. Dr. Kurt and Dr. Wyatt Knechtel will tell you whether that conservative path fits, or whether the tooth needs something else.

The photo you keep cropping
Whitening only changes natural enamel. An old filling, a deep stain, a worn edge, a small gap — those keep their story. A veneer is a thin shell bonded on the front so the tooth you see in the mirror can look more even. It is adhesive and porcelain, not surgery.
Lumineers are a brand of ultra-thin porcelain (Cerinate®). Our prepared materials describe them as thinner than 0.3 mm. Traditional veneers are thicker and more often need the tooth shaped so the new surface sits flush. How much enamel, if any, comes off is a decision in the chair — not a promise on a website.
Not every smile is a veneer story
This conversation is for chips, worn edges, stains that will not bleach, modest spaces, or teeth that look uneven in size. If the bite needs to move, that is often SureSmile or another alignment plan — a shell cannot do an orthodontist’s job.
We will say what is well-suited. We will not sell a guaranteed makeover.
Two visits, not a movie montage
Many Lumineers cases live across two appointments. The first is looking, talking, and impressions so a lab can make shells that belong to your mouth. The second is a try-in, small adjustments, and bonding. You leave with the new front — and sometimes a little sensitivity to hot or cold that eases.
Because prep can be conservative, some people do not need numbing. Some do. We do not promise a visit without shots or a day with no recovery. That depends on your teeth, not the brochure.
Myths about veneers
“I can eat anything.” Treat them like teeth. Sticky and very hard foods, and using your mouth as a tool, are how porcelain and enamel both get into trouble.
“They never stain.” Porcelain resists stain well. The natural teeth next to them can still pick up coffee and tobacco. Cleanings still matter.
“They last a set number of years / they come with a warranty.” Longevity follows bite, grinding, and care. We do not quote a guaranteed lifespan or a warranty on this page. Some Lumineers can later be removed if little enamel was shaped. That is case-by-case, not a reversible-procedure promise.
Whitening or veneers first?
If the question is only color on natural enamel, start with the whitening guide. If the tooth itself will not bleach — or a chip keeps catching your eye — this is the other chapter.
